RMS Express Installation on Mac OS X Using Wine

Introduction

Wine provides a Windows emulation environment that is placed within a wrapper that is a Mac OS X application. Wine can be used to run a large number of Windows applications from within the Mac OS X environment, and is useful when the Windows application does not have an equivalent version released to run as a native Mac OS X application.

Installation of RMS Express can occur on Macintosh systems, using the Wine environment to emulate Windows. This does not suffer the adverse effects of loss of concurrent access to Mac OS X applications that would occur if the user implemented the recommendation from WinkLink.org by running RMS Express under BootCamp. Users should be aware that there are some operational limitations when operating RMS Express from within the Wine environment. Another viable alternative to Wine, which also avoids the loss of concurrent access to Mac OS X applications, and provides a higher level of compatibility with Windows, would be to run RMS Express from within the VMWare Fusion environment, using Windows 7 or later. Wine has the attractive attribute of being FREE.

Mac OS X users who are switching application focus between RMS Express that is running under Wine and their other Mac OS X applications should be aware of the following operational issues:

This article will provide you with information on obtaining Wine, installing a minimum version of 4 of the .NET framework within Wine (a dependency that RMS Express requires) and installing the RMS Express software into the Wine wrapper.

Download a copy of RMS Express from here before proceeding with construction of a Wine wrapper. Look part way down the page for a download link to a .zip archive. Once downloaded, and if not downloaded from the Safari web-browser (which automatically decompresses .zip archives), you will need to decompress the .zip archive prior to executing the installation steps. To decompress the .zip archive, locate it with the Finder and double-click on the .zip archive.

NOTE: Creation of a Wine wrapper for RMS Express is a time consuming task, with significant delays imposed when data is pulled from the internet. Please be patient while waiting for tasks to complete as you progress through the instruction steps. Please read the entire set of instructions for installation once prior to performing this procedure. It is recommended that you print the instructions and mark off your progress in order to remain in sync with the instructions.

Obtaining & Installing Wine

There are several versions of Wine available. The instructions provided in this article use the Wineskin Winery, which is available for download by clicking here. Although other versions of Wine may function, this version appears to be well maintained and is simpler to interact with with than some other versions.

Once on the WineSkin web-site, click on the Downloads menu and then click on the click me to download link. This will forward you to the sourceforge web-site, and your download of the .zip archive that contains the Wineskin Winery application will begin after a short delay. If you are using the Safari web-browser, the .zip archive will be decompressed automatically. For other web-browsers, you will need to navigate, in the Finder, to your download folder and then double-click on the .zip archive to decompress the archive. Once decompressed, drag the Wineskin Winery.app application to your /Applications folder.

Creating the Wine Wrapper &anp; Installing RMS Express

The following steps walk through the construction of a Wine wrapper, installation of the .NET framework, and installation of RMS Express:

  1. Launch Wineskin Winery and then click on button to Create New Blank Wrapper.

  1. When the window is displayed to prompt for entry of the name of the wrapper, enter the following name: RMS Express v1.3.7, or an appropriate name for the version of RMS Express that you intend to install. Then click the OK button.

  2. When prompted to allow the application WineskinX11 to accept incoming network connects, click on the Allow button.

  3. If you have never run Wineskin Winery and created a Wine wrapper before, you may be prompted to install other packages at this point. Please allow installation of any package that you are prompted to install.

  4. After some delay, while WineSkin is creating the Wine wrapper, a dialog box will be displayed that indicates Wrapper Creation Finished. Click on the button that is labeled View wrapper in Finder.

At this stage, the Wine wrapper is constructed but does not have the .NET framework or the RMS Express application installed.

  1. With the Finder in focus, and the ~/Applications/Wineskin/ folder in view, double-click on the RMS Express v1.3.7 application icon to launch the Wine wrapped application.

  2. Attempting to launch the application will result in the Finder displaying a dialog box that indicates The application “RMS Express v1.3.7.app” can't be opened. When this dialog box is displayed, click on the OK button.

This is a separate software issue that has a work-around by making a second attempt to launch the application. Double-click on the RMS v1.3.7 application icon, and the application should then successfully launch on the second and all subsequent attempts.

  3. We will now install the .NET framework. When the RMS Express v1.3.7 application launches, click on the Advanced button.

  1. When the Advanced window opens, click on the Tools tab-view.

  2. When the Tools tab-view comes into focus, click on the Winetricks button.

  1. After a short delay, Winetricks will populate the window with a list of items that are available to install. Until this list is populated, the buttons in the window are disabled. Once the buttons become enabled, it is necessary to update Winetricks prior to proceeding. Click on the Update Winetricks button.

  2. You will then be prompted to confirm that you wish to update Winetricks. Click on the OK button.

  1. The buttons in the window will be disabled (gray) while Winetricks is updated. After a short delay, the Winetricks update will complete, and the window will display disclosure triangles which encapsulate the items that are available for installation. Click on the dlls disclosure triangle to expand the list of available dll items.

  1. Scroll down and locate the MS .NET 4.5 checkbox that is found under the Run column, and click in the checkbox to select it. Then click on the Run button.

Winetricks will now install the .NET framework. This will take some time. The bottom portion of the Winetricks window will display a log of scripted commands as they are executed. When the scripted commands have been completed, you will see a message displayed at the bottom of the log window that states: Winetricks Commands Finished!!

  1. A dialog box will then be displayed, asking you to confirm that you wish to run Winetricks. Click on the Run button.

The bulk of the remaining steps, up until installing the RMS Express application, are associated with installing version 4.5, and all prerequisite versions, of the .NET framework. For a Windows user, much of this is automated through the Windows update process. Since Wine is not actually providing a Windows operating system, but an emulated environment under which Windows applications are allowed to execute, significant manual intervention by the user is required during the .NET framework installation.

As each version of the .NET framework are installed, and as Winetricks transitions to the install the next version of the .NET framework, you will observe file download progress indicators that are associated with Winetricks obtaining the files required for the next download. This document does not include each of those progress windows, rather only those windows that you will need to interact with will be displayed. Please allow each of the progress displays to run to a normal and successful completion.

  2. Winetricks will launch the installer for version 2.0 of the .NET framework. Click on the Next > button to begin the installation process.

  1. Click to check the box that indicates I accept the terms of the License Agreement, and then click on the Install > button.

  2. When the version 2.0 .NET framework installer indicates that the setup has been completed, click on the Finish button.

  1. PLEASE READ AHEAD, THROUGH STEP 22 BEFORE PERFORMING THIS STEP!

After Winetricks completes downloading of the installer for version 3.0 of the .NET framework, the installer will be launched. Click on the radio button labeled I have read and ACCEPT the terms of the License Agreement. Then click on the Install > button to begin the installation.

  2. While Winetricks is installing version 3.0 of the .NET framework, the following window will be displayed. If you have your Dock located vertically along the left edge of your display, you should drag the window out from under the dock. Any movement of the window should be performed immediately, and prior to completion of the version 3.0 .NET framework installation.

  3. While Winetricks is installing version 3.0 of the .NET framework, the following window will be displayed, along with a tool-tip that will appear and indicate when the installation is completed. Do not click on any other application while waiting for this to occur as doing so may suppress the display of the tool tip that provides notification of completion.

  1. To obtain access to the Exit button, either double-click on the icon that is displayed in the lower-left portion of the window, or right-click on the icon and select exit. If you do not have a two-button mouse/track-pad, and double-click, the window may minimize into the dock. button.

THIS STEP MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE TEXT BALLON DISPLAY DESCRIBED IN STEP 21 IS REMOVED!

  2. If the window minimizes into the dock, click on the window in the dock and then click on the Exit

  1. After launching RMS Express, the application will check for an update.

WARNING: DO NOT apply an update to RMS Express under Wine!

Updating is not compatible with the Wine environment. Applying an update may render your RMS Express Wine wrapper non-functional. If an update is available, you will need to construct a new Wine wrapper, using an installer that supports the latest version of RMS Express. If the following window appears, click on the Remind Me Later button.

Once all installation tasks have been completed, including installation of the .NET framework and the RMS Express application, quit the RMS Express v1.3.7 application and then re-launch the RMS Express v1.3.7 application. Upon re-launch, you will see the RMS Express application, encapsulated in a Mac OS X application window, but in all other respects, is running RMS Express. You can now interact with the RMS Express application on your Macintosh in the same manner as a Windows users would.

IMPORTANT: If you experience problems with either Wine or Wineskin, please DO NOT report the issues to Idaho ARES. Rather, any issues should be reported directly to the Wine or Wineskin developers. Idaho ARES is not responsible for maintaining the function of either the Wine or Wineskin software.

CONGRATULATIONS: Installation of RMS Express, into a Wine wrapper on Mac OS X, has been completed. You can now use other training material on RMS Express to get started using RMS Express.

RMS Express Winmor Peer-To-Peer (P2P) Setup - contributed by Eric Lougee (KB1OKX)

Idaho ARES would like to express its gratitude for the following article, which was contributed by Eric Lougee (KB1OKX).

RMS EXPRESS P2P provides fast, reliable, error free ARQ messaging directly between two stations, bypassing the Winlink system’s infrastructure. Operation is fully automatic in both directions once a connection (handshake) is achieved. This method permits discrete, error free local message transfer with attachments (ICS-213, Flmsg files, etc.) even if the Internet has failed or long-range RMS HF stations are unavailable due to poor propagation. Further, the receiving station need not be manned as long as it is listening for a connection on an agreed upon frequency.

If not already installed, download the RMS Express sound card program at www.winlink.org/ClientSoftware, and follow their instructions for installation and initial setup.

These P2P Quick-start instructions assume the use of a Signalink USB sound card interface, so setup and adjustment procedures may vary slightly for other interfaces. After coordinating a Peer-to- Peer session with another station, follow these instructions:

  1. Click on either New Message button to open a blank form.

Check that the Peer-To-Peer Message button is selected. Only one call sign may be entered in the To box when using P2P. Click on Post to Outbox after composing message.

  1. Click on Open Session (Fig. 4) and then on Setup (Fig. 5) in the session window that opens. Select Winmor TNC Setup from the drop-down setup menu.

(Observe that the WINMOR Sound Card TNC window also opened on your screen)

Just as with Fldigi, select USB Audio CODEC for both the capture and playback device. Select 1600 for your inbound session bandwidth. Click on the Update button. (If you have a different sound card interface, this selection may vary.)

  1. Go back to the Setup drop-down box and click on Radio Set-up. Select Manual or a specific radio from the drop-down menu, then USB, USB Digital, or FM as appropriate. Select the appropriate USB Radio Control Port if in use or None, and the PTT Port to External if needed. Click Update, then Close. (Look up the USB port number in your computer’s Hardware Profile screen.)

  1. Return to the Setup drop-down box and perform Transmit Level Tests with the Peer Station. Adjust your Signalink TX settings based on the ALC indicator on your radio and the Peer Station’s signal reports. (Turn up the mic gain until the ALC meter indicates, then back it off just until it disappears.) Adjust the Winmor TNC Rcv Level by tuning the RX knob of your Signalink while the peer station performs his transmit level test. Levels should be in the green region.

  2. Enter the other station’s Call Sign, the Center Freq and Dial Freq. The center frequency must be set exactly 1500 Hz above the dial frequency.

  1. Click the Start button. Observe the Rcv Level and adjust your Signalink until a “handshake” is achieved and the two stations begin interacting automatically.

  2. Check your Inbox and Outbox. Look for attachments. Make note of your settings for future sessions.

ABOUT WINMOR

Winmor is an HF digital sound-card mode designed primarily for use with the Winlink 2000 radio-email network. Winmor provides an alternative to expensive PACTOR hardware modems at speeds between Pactor 1 and 2.

Winmor, the Winmor software modem, and the RMS Express application were developed by Rick Muething, KN6KB and Vic Poor, W5SMM. The Winmor modem includes innovative features such as a “busy frequency” detector to reduce potential interference.

While the software itself is free, a registration donation supports ongoing development by the non-profit Amateur Radio Safety Foundation, operator of the Winlink 2000 system. Registration also removes the initial start-up reminder and permits automatic software updates via the Internet.

Information in this document was compiled by Eric Lougee KB1OKX and edited by Dave Colter WA1ZCN for NH-ARES.
